Frederick Banting had the idea that began the discovery process. He performed the surgeries on the dogs. The discovery of insulin was the highlight of his career.

J. J. Macleod was the head of the lab where Banting and Best worked. Although he didn't do any of the actual research, he oversaw the project and offered many helpful suggestions.

Charles Best, a young biochemistry student, assisted Banting. He performed the blood and urine tests that were necessary in determining the diabetic state of the dogs.

James Collip, a biochemist, purified the extract to make it usable on humans.
